Problem

Obtaining Datasheet-Specified Performance From High-Resolution Analog-to-Digital Converters can be a difficult task requiring extensive research and development. Manufacturer's data sheets are often incomplete or unsuited to some applications of the devices.

Solution

We have implemented several measurement designs using sigma-delta ADCs having 24-bit resolution, and achieving the manufacturer's published performance results. This is not a simple task. There are several issues of circuit and circuit board design that arise when embracing this level of analog circuit performance.

Every detail of signal integrity becomes is important when pursuing the low noise levels and high dynamic range that are associated with such measurements. An advantage of implementation of measurements using this technology is that it is often possible to eliminate amplification of low-level sensor signals prior to data conversion. This can result in a more compact assembly together with improvement in performance that results from the use of fewer analog circuit stages in the signal path.

Results

We have achieved very high performance levels from several high resolution A/D converters.
